yumoto at nict.go.jpI have been involved in the clinical application of biomagnetic measurements at a university hospital until recently. To record the weak magnetic fields generated by brain activity, ultra-sensitive magnetic sensors are required, but until now, it has been necessary to cool the sensors with liquid helium to operate them. Recently, a new ultra-sensitive magnetic sensor called an optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) that operates at room temperature has emerged, and it is garnering attention as a next-generation sensor for biomagnetic measurements. This sensor can be closely attached to the subject’s head and moves with it, making it possible to measure brain magnetic fields even in situations that involve motion. However, there are challenges that must be overcome to achieve this. This laboratory was established with the mission of launching a multi-channel OPM system, and we are looking for researchers to collaborate with us.
