Abstract
Vision science has been accumulating profound knowledge about how the visual system analyzes basic image attributes including shape, color, motion, and combine them into a coherent scene representation. However, natural realistic scenes we daily encounter are more than mere integration of basic image attributes. Perception of material properties (or Shitsukan) is one of important missing factors. Based on the idea that estimation of complex material properties is based on characteristic image cues (image features robustly correlated with the target properties), we have studied neural computations of surface gloss, translucency, surface wetness, subresolution texture fineness, liquid viscosity, as well as material categories. In these studies, we strengthen psychophysics by incorporating advanced achievements in information science and neuroscience. In addition, we leveraged scientific understanding of visual processing to develop novel technologies to control material appearance of real objects, including a projection mapping that makes static objects appear to move.
