Abstract:
Inhibition in the central nervous system is essential for the brain to function properly. In particular, inhibition between functional brain regions (e.g. Cross-modal inhibition) is assumed to be important for a certain brain region to function without interference from other regions, but its mechanism has not been fully understood. We have been investigating inter-regional inhibition in the human brain, using negative BOLD signals, which can be measured by functional MRI and are thought to reflect neuronal inhibition. In this talk, I will introduce our recent fMRI studies showing that inter-regional inhibition changes with development and aging and that it may have functional roles.
