“Dual stochasticity of cortex provides a biologically-plausible learning with the most efficient coding”

Abstract:

Abstract: Stochastic activities are ubiquitous in the cortex; Synapses evolves with large fluctuation and neurons generate irregular spike trains. Previous studies have revealed the advantages of these stochastic behaviors. However, the relationship and synergy of them remain elusive. Here we present a simple framework that consistently explains various experimental findings of the cortex including stochastic activities of neurons and synapses. We derive a biologically-plausible learning algorithm from the framework and show that the learning enables the cortex to realize the most efficient coding.
