“Cognitive mechanisms of close relationship maintenance and building”

Abstract:

Close romantic relationships are believed to have several evolutional benefits including stabilizing feedings, inhibiting prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases, and improving individual’s mental and physical health. However, extra-pair relationships, which could threaten the stable long-term relationship maintenance are also prevalent in human societies. Some researchers have suggested that deliberate executive control as well as automatic self-control could play crucial roles to derogate interest in new relationships and maintain the committed relationships; however, few empirical studies about the interplays of the two cognitive mechanisms have been reported. We tackled such an issue through psychological experiments with a functional MRI, and proposed empirical evidences of the interplay hypothesis. We also would like to introduce our previous work about neural correlates of individual differences in preference of “mate-poaching”, which is related to the decision-making of relationship building.
