“Elucidation of the mechanism of schizophrenia using eye movement”

Abstract:

Schizophrenia is a chronic mental disorder that affects various cognitive functions. Patients with schizophrenia (SZs) suffer from positive symptoms (e.g., delusion, hallucinations), negative symptoms (e.g., reduced motivation), cognitive impairments (e.g., deficits in attention and memory), and also showed eye movement abnormality. The eye movement abnormality could be reflected underlying computational and information processing deficits in SZs. We analyzed eye movement of SZs under free-viewing conditions and found that SZs have an anomaly in inhibition of return (IOR), the mechanism that inhibits orienting to previously fixated or attended locations. The impaired IOR was a cause of the limited scanning and could influence daily visual search behavior of SZs. This result is consistent with the view that the deficit in predictive coding underlies heterogeneous symptoms of SZs.
