Abstract
Various psychiatric symptoms are known to be associated with impairments in value-based decision-making. Yet, little is known about which symptoms are specifically associated with the impairment. Also, it remains an open question what aspects of decision-making are affected by the symptoms. Here in this study, we show there exist two dissociable factors underlying multiple psychiatric symptoms: the first one is mainly associated with obsessive-compulsive traits and the second one is associated with depressive and anxious traits. Furthermore, by combining computational modeling with mediation analysis, we demonstrate that the first factor of psychiatric symptoms, but not the second factor, was negatively correlated with overall performance of the decision-making task; and that the negative effect was mediated by increase in random- exploration and decrease in uncertainty-driven direct-exploration. These findings together imply that obsessive-compulsivity-related traits impair decision-making through the change of exploration strategies.
