Abstract:

The definition of pain endorsed by IASP (International Association of Study for Pain) is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage. Thus, in clinical situation, doctors listen to their patients’ complaints then based on this knowledge and previous experiences, they go ahead and prescribe some amount of analgesics. This is a familiar but sobering sight. Like the opioid epidemics in the US, this lack of objective evaluation of pain has caused undue impact on patients and to society.

To transform this state of affairs, it is our continued ambition to develop an objective way to measure pain.

In this seminar, I will first introduce the reason why we need to measure pain. Next, I will present my on-going project with PaMela Inc., and finally I will discuss my current animal research aimed to objectively evaluate pain in the brain using high resolution MRI.

I’m confident that what I will show you today will be essential not only in evaluating new analgesics but also in distributing unbiased medical services to all types of patients.

About CiNet’s Friday Lunch Seminars:
The Friday Lunch Seminar is CiNet’s main regular meeting series, held every week at 12:15 in the beautiful main lecture theatre on the ground floor at CiNet. The talks are typically 40mins long and orientated towards an inter-disciplinary audience. They are informal, social, and most people bring their own lunch to eat during the talk. They are open to anyone who is feeling curious and wants to come, regardless of where you work.
