Motor control studies have long focused on simple tasks involving a limited number of degrees-of-freedom. The nervous system might overcome the complexity of controlling many degrees-of-freedom through a modular organization, but this possibility is still debated. Modeling of motor learning has also relied on simple tasks and has provided only limited account of the modular organization of motor control and of the large inter-individual differences observed in complex tasks. To tackle real-life motor skills, we need to systematically investigate individual control strategies and motor learning with a modular organization.
