Abstract:

Recent developments in carbon fiber running-specific prostheses (RSPs) have allowed individuals with lower extremity amputation (ILEA) to regain the functional capability of running and sprinting. There are many amputee sprinters who are now able to run faster than able-bodied athletes. However, ironically, this phenomenon has raised a debate in the scientific community regarding the potential advantages or disadvantages of RSPs in athletic ILEA compared to able-bodied counterparts in athletics. In this case, can amputee athletes be the fastest sprinter on the earth? In this presentation, I will talk about the history, functions, and regulations of RSPs in Paralympics, and current world records in athletic ILEA. Next, biomechanical mechanisms underlying athletic performance in ILEAs will be presented. Especially, I will introduce two ongoing studies about RSPs using 1) three dimensional motion analysis, and 2) big data analysis for ILEAs in AIST Tokyo Waterfront. Finally, a debate regarding the advantages or disadvantages of RSPs will be presented.

About CiNet’s Friday Lunch Seminars:
The Friday Lunch Seminar is CiNet’s main regular meeting series, held every week at 12:15 in the beautiful main lecture theatre on the ground floor at CiNet. The talks are typically 40mins long and orientated towards an inter-disciplinary audience. They are informal, social, and most people bring their own lunch to eat during the talk. They are open to anyone who is feeling curious and wants to come, regardless of where you work.
