Abstract:
As a whole, the hippocampal region is the most common site of seizure initiation. However, one of its networks, entorhinal cortex (EC), can develop acute seizures more easily than another, the subfield CA3. The reasons for this difference are not understood. We hypothesize that seizure susceptibility is related to the cognitive computations performed by these networks. CA3 is believed to store memories as discrete attractor states separated by barriers, which prevent mixing of memories and may constrain excessive activity. Meanwhile, EC encodes positions in space as continuous attractor states that lack barriers between them, which may facilitate the spread of excessive activity into seizures. We combine attractor network simulations, trained recurrent neural networks, and high-density in vivo neural recordings to reveal how task topology influences seizure susceptibility in CA3 and EC.
